5 Key Factors That Determine Your ISN Rating

5 Key Factors That Determine Your ISN® Rating

To be a successful company, you need to be seen as safe, qualified and reliable. Workplace safety is one of the most crucial elements of industrial work. It takes a lot of time, money, and energy to become a certified and reliable company in any industry. Your ISN® (ISNetworld®) rating is one metric that can make or break your company’s status. There are five key factors that determine your ISN® rating. Knowing what these five factors are can help you to make improvements and ultimately increase your ISN® rating. A higher ISN® rating shows potential clients that you are reliable, trustworthy, and efficient to work with.

What Is the ISNetworld®?

The International Suppliers Networld® (ISN®) is an online contractor safety management database used to vet and qualify suppliers and contractors globally. This database streamlines companies’ and contractors’ compliance pre-qualification processes and works to help contractors, suppliers and hiring clients to ensure regulatory compliance. With over 650 hiring clients using the platform, users can review, grade, and assess suppliers and contractors based on their hiring criteria. The ISN® grades suppliers and contractors based on client requirements, such as project risk, type of industry, and local restrictions or ordinances. Overall, the ISN® rating ensures safe work compliance, company reliability, and performance across many industries through a transparent vetting process.

5 Factors that Contribute to Your ISN® Rating

1. Complete the Management Safety Questionnaire

The first factor that determines your ISN® rating is the management safety questionnaire (MSQ). This section of your account can be intimidating as it can contain anywhere from 800-2000 questions depending on how many clients you have. The MSQ is one of the most critical components in contractor applications and ISN® certification. The ISNetworld® collects information that contractors and suppliers submit based on specific regulatory and hiring requirements. It accounts for 10 to 15 percent of the overall ISN® rating.

2. Company Safety Programs

The second factor that determines your ISN® rating is your company safety programs. The Review and Verification Services® (RAVS®) portion considers all self-reported information in relation to specific hiring or service requirements. Provide all documentation detailing safety programs for your industry to your hiring client. RAVS® accounts for approximately 30 to 40 percent of the overall ISNetworld® rating, making this a critical step in the ISN® rating process.. You should include national and individual safety standards in your submission.

3. OSHA Logs

Another key factor that determines your ISN® rating is your OSHA logs. Similar to your RAVS® safety compliance, your OSHA logs detail any past and present workplace injuries that employees sustained on the job. ISNetworld® looks at all OSHA recorded incidents and tallies them into a TRIR, or total recordable incident rate. If your total is under the industry average, your TRIR does not affect your ISN® rating. If your total is above the industry average, you may receive a failing grade.

4. EMR (experience modification rating)

The Experience Modification Rating is used by insurance firms to price the cost of workers’ compensation premiums. EMR uses a variety of indicators such as injury costs and claim history to make a prediction of future risk. The EMR accounts for 10 to 15 percent of the ISNetworld® grade.

5. Workplace Safety Culture (Insurance Coverage)

Proof of insurance coverage goes hand in hand with your EMR. You must provide insurance coverage to prove eligible for an ISNetworld® rating. This also helps to show that your workplace safety culture is a high priority. If your insurance fails to meet basic coverage for employees, ISNetworld® may reject you or provide a failing grade.
